It might be intimidating to step forward in buying art if you have never done so before, so I thought I'd throw out some tips on how to start.

BUYING:

First of all, if there is a piece that you see on my website that you are in love with, and it doesn't have a 'SOLD' sign on it, email me or call me or call me right away to tell me that you'd like to have it.  From there we'll arrange a time that you can come and pick up the painting with your cash or cheque ready.  If you aren't able to make it out to Langley, British Columbia (where I live), we can arrange for it to be sent to you via mail, with an additional charge for shipping.  I will make sure to package it safely for you, so it arrives happy and ready for it's home on your wall.

COMMISSIONING:
Sounds intimidating to some people.  But don't be scared.  This is option #2, and many people prefer ordering a customized, personal painting.  Say you're looking through my website, and you see a painting or two that you love, but they're SOLD, and your heart is broken.  OR, say that you had an idea of what you wanted in mind, but you haven't seen your exact idea in one of my paintings.  THIS is when you email or call me and say, "I want to commission a painting."  I'd like to mention here that it's a good idea to choose an idea in the general style and subject of art of what you've seen on my website.  This way, we're both more sure of what we're doing and getting!  For example, I paint mostly in acrylics and do landscapes.  I would probably recommend not going for a charcoal portrait of your family, per say.  Then again, I will try anything new if you wanted to challenge me!

Here are some details that you can send me that might help me figure out what you want in your painting:
  • size and shape (check the opus website for exhibition canvas sizes, and measure the size on your wall.)
  • subject & elements (ocean, trees, foreground grass, bird in the sky, etc)
  • colouring (black & white, blues & greens, what colour wall you will be putting it on)
  • mood or meaning (dramatic, dark, cheerful, intimate, warm, vast, etc)
  • timeline (let me know if you need it done by a certain time for a birthday or event)
  • photos (not required, but some people have photos of what they want painted, and if I feel that the photo is of a good enough quality, I may be able to use them as a reference while I paint)

Once I have a good idea of what you want, I will give you a quote of what it will cost.   Commissioning is not more expensive than buying my regular pieces, but there may be some variation in price if the subject chosen requires more detailing.

PRICING:
$230 per square foot, along with $100 for admin and supplies.

A quick look at some common sizes & their prices:
  • 1ft x 1ft  - $330
  • 1ft x 2ft  - $560
  • 1ft x 3ft  - $790
  • 2ft x 2ft  - $1020
  • 2ft x 3ft  - $1480
  • 2ft x 4ft  - $1940
  • 3ft x 4ft  - $2860
  • 3ft x 3ft  - $2170
  • 3ft x 5ft  - $3550

If the price I quote you works, let me know that you're good to go and that I can proceed.  Depending on the project, I may request 50% of the price up front, and the rest to be due upon pick-up of the painting.  This is just to assure us both, that once we agree on the price and I begin painting, we're both 'in'.  I will try to give you a general timeline of when I can have it finished by so that you can plan on when to be ready.

I will send you an email or call you when your painting is done, and then you can come and pick it up!  (For directions and address, email me and I will send them to you)

PAYMENT METHODS:
cheque, cash, or online 'interac' accepted.
I am also open to payment plans, as well.  The minimum plan I offer is $100 a month, and 12 months maximum.  We would arrange this with post-dated cheques.  It's a way to get the painting you were really hoping to get if you're on a bit of a tighter budget.
